Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature post hosted and created by The Broke and the Bookish.
It’s been a while since I last did Top Ten Tuesday, so when I saw the topic posted by one of my friends, I knew I had to do it, even if I’m already a bit late to the party.
The topic for this week is 10 things that books that turn you off about a book. And since I can’t think ten, I’m doing 5 deal breakers and 5 that will seal the deal (for me) when it comes to books.
THE DEAL BREAKERS
1. OH SO MARY SUE OR GARY STU
Nobody is perfect. And I mean, NOBODY! I am completely turned off my books where the protagonist could do no wrong. Everything they do, it turns to gold. I mean, come on, how is that realistic? I could deal with it if it has something to do with the plot, but if not, then… no… just no. I need a character I can relate to, and a character who is perfect from head to toe, is definitely not one I’d be able to.
2. THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD
I’m the type of reader who doesn’t have much patience with long books. Although, in some cases, if it’s really good (or extremely amazing), I’d get through a thousand pages of it (Yes, I’m looking at you The Way of Kings). There are some books, however, that draws out the story so long that it gets boring and, well, uninteresting. Same could also be said about book series that adds more books just for the sake of it, and that, I also dislike.
3. WHAT PLOT?
A book, or a story, should have a setting, a set of characters, and a plot. If a book has no plot, or has one but doesn’t make any sense, then it’s time to bid that book adieu.
4. I CAN’T DO NON-FICTION
Non-fictions are great. They’re just not for me. Plain and simple.
5. UGGHHH THAT COVER
I was told, never to judge a book by its cover. But come on!!! The cover is what draws us to a book in the first place. It’s what gets you curious. Before you even read the synopsis, you see the cover first. If you are not attracted to the cover of the book, would even bother reading the synopsis? I won’t.
NOW LET’S GO TO THE DEAL SEALERS
Here are the things that seals the deal for me when it comes to books
1. I CARE ABOUT YOU, OH SO MUCH!
I love it when books make you care about the characters in the book. You become invested in their adventures and misadventures. They become It becomes even more special if the author make you care about not only the protagonists, but also the antagonists. One good example of this would be The Darkling from The Grisha trilogy.
I want to be “WOWED”. But to be fair, who doesn’t want to be anyways? If a book can surprise me, on the first few pages, or even chapters, of a book, then that would be great! I want a book that would keep me interested in a long period of time. I want to be rivetted.
3. DAMN YOU LOVERS
I like romance in books, but only if it’s done well. Only if the author makes me care about these two lovers and be invested in their relationship. I want to be rooting for them to be together. It doesn’t matter if it’s friendship turns to lover, a forbidden love, love that gradually develops. I really don’t care, as long as I get why they fell for each other. As long as I understand. Otherwise, I prefer the romance aspect of it to be nonexistent.
4. OH TAKE ME TO THE FANTASY WORLD PLEASE
I love fantasy books. So, if you recommend me a fantasy, i’ll definitely check it out.
5. I KNOOOOWWW YOU!!
If my fave author is the one who wrote the book, the book would be automatically added to my TBR.
That is all for me, how about you guys? What stuff turns you immediately off about a book?
